A Couple New Weddings and Pictures to Talk About. Yay!

July 14, 2025 Wedding Photography

Long time, no wedding pictures. Boo!

Last winter I was working part time as the pool monitor at the Athletic Club of Bend and made the time to do some writing and sharing of pictures. Then April hit and Mary and I went to Mallorca, Spain for a bicycling/scuba diving trip. Over 400 miles of riding with 31,000 feet of climbing in 8 days can tire a person out. Plus, I’ll be honest, COVID took a toll on my business and it’s only now starting to come back. I really do need to get better at the Instagram, Facebook stuff but just am not addicted to it the way younger people seem to be. I like reading and listening to interesting books on history and people who shaped our nation.

I especially love Ulysses Grant: he was a terrible businessman but absolutely brilliant battle commander. Perhaps that’s why I love him so much because I’m not super amazing at the social media, but can take pictures with the best of them.

A busy week generating a pile of pictures

A couple weeks ago I shot three fabulous weddings in 8 days. Heaven for me, especially when compared to 8 days of riding over 400 miles and climbing 31,000 feet. In December when looking back on this year I imagine it will be my favorite week. Some people go to work and dread being there. They look forward to both their paychecks and the weekends, but nothing else. Once upon a time my life sounded the same. But now I look forward to the excitement and uniqueness of each wedding. What will happen? Will I get the moments of the day? The answer to the first question is: unknown. The answer to the second question is: you bet your ass I’ll get those pictures.

Lauren after getting ready but before the dress. She wanted pictures out behind the Shevlin Commons house where she was getting ready. I thought of the chair and the wine. Add my Profoto light and the picture was complete.

Doing pictures wakes up my brain

Normally I’m a “I’ll get it done in a little bit” person. But when doing pictures something clicks and wakes up. If I could figure out the technique for doing that all the time my wife would be amazed. I shot all three weddings and was done with the pictures you’ll see over the next few posts within four days of shooting the last wedding. Not three months. It was twelve days from the first wedding to being done with all three. I’m extremely proud of making that happen. Now to mow the lawn, fix the fence, cook dinners, clean the house, etc. with the same enthusiasm.

I’m excited to share these pictures and stories

Right now, as I’m writing this, I’m doing my part-time-pocket-change job working as the pool monitor at the Athletic Club of Bend. As the sun works its way west, its bright light and furnace-like heat extends across the small desk where I’m typing. Once it gets to the iPad I can’t type anymore. And it’s now getting too close and I’ll have to run and find new shade. I’m looking forward to sharing the pictures with you all and talking about the parts of the weddings that can’t be told with a picture. Or more fully understood with words.

Until then, adios!
