Fall Wedding Photography at Camp Sherman for Betsy and Russell

Betsy and Russell were married in Camp Sherman in the fall with a medium sized wedding at Lake Creek Lodge*. Betsy was one of those brides who was both easy to work with and willing to try different picture ideas. I shot this wedding with Todd Martyn-Jones Photography before he moved to Lake Tahoe. Laurel Brauns played guitar and sang during the ceremony. (I used to work with her sister Katie at The Bulletin) The light, the colors, the couple, the music, the setting all came together to make a beautiful wedding. The cake leaned a little and became an interesting topic of conversation and perhaps a little side betting.

My half of the pictures from the day emphasize Betsy because Todd was doing pictures with Russell.

I enjoyed every minute of being at their wedding. Here’s to hoping they both enjoyed their day and their lives together.

These portraits of Betsy and Russell were mostly shot with the beauty dish on the Profoto 500 w/s light I regularly use. The beauty dish shapes light in an interesting and beautiful way. It’s soft with harder edges. Some faces really are made for what the beauty dish can do and Betsy has one of those faces. I was using two lenses on two bodies for the day. The lenses were the Nikon 35mm f1.4 and the Nikon 85mm f1.4. A couple years later I switched to the Nikon 28mm f1.4 and the Nikon 105mm f1.4 lenses for my work. I loved the 28/105 combo. The one shortcoming to all these lenses was the insanely slow autofocus. The lenses themselves couldn’t be better for color, contrast, sharpness, and bokeh but I missed a ton of pictures with how slow they could autofocus. And a person really needs autofocus for moving subjects shot at f1.4. I used the Nik Collection to change the look of Betsy sitting on the bed framed in the rustic door. I love using the various programs in Nik. Most, if not all, of my black and white get done with the Silver Efex Pro program as part of the Nik Collection.
